Every few months, someone declares short-form video “saturated” or “over.” Every few months, they’re wrong. Reels — and short vertical video generally — remain the single highest-reach, lowest-cost format available to a small brand with no media budget. Here’s why, and how we actually use it for clients.
Why Reels still outperform everything else, cost-for-cost
Every other format on Instagram — static posts, carousels — is now shown primarily to people who already follow you. Reels are the one format the algorithm still actively pushes to non-followers, because Instagram is competing directly with TikTok for watch time and needs a constant supply of fresh video to do it.
That means a well-made Reel with zero ad spend behind it can realistically reach far beyond your existing follower count — something that’s become increasingly rare for any other organic content type on any platform.
The mistake most brands make with Reels
They treat them like ads: polished, scripted, clearly “produced,” often reused straight from a TV or billboard campaign. That’s precisely the content style the format’s audience scrolls past fastest. Reels are watched in a feed built around native, slightly rough, fast-paying-off content — the format punishes anything that feels like an interruption.
The Gambit playbook for Reels that actually reach new people
1. Hook in the first second, not the first sentence. You have roughly one second before a viewer decides to keep watching or scroll past. Open on the payoff, the surprising claim, or the visual — never on a logo, an intro, or “hey guys.”
2. Design for watch-through, not likes. The single most important ranking signal for Reels is what percentage of viewers watch to the end. A 12-second Reel that 90% of viewers finish will consistently outperform a beautifully shot 45-second Reel that most people abandon at the ten-second mark.
3. Use on-screen text, always. A large share of viewers watch with sound off, especially in public or at work. If your point only lands through narration, you’ve lost most of your audience before the message even arrives.
4. Post consistently, not perfectly. Three simple, phone-shot Reels a week beats one highly produced Reel a month. The algorithm rewards accounts that give it fresh content regularly — consistency is a ranking factor in its own right, not just a nice habit.
5. Give people an explicit reason to comment. Ask a direct question, take a debatable position, or invite people to share their own experience. Comments are weighted heavily in how far a Reel travels — don’t leave that to chance.
What this looks like for a small business with no production budget
You don’t need a videographer or a studio. The Reels that consistently perform best for our SME clients are shot on a phone, in the actual business — behind the counter, on the shop floor, at the client site — showing something real: how a product is made, a common customer question answered on camera, a before/after, a quick opinion on something happening in the industry.
The cost is time and consistency, not equipment. That’s exactly why it remains the best free marketing tool available to a business that can’t yet afford a paid media budget — and why it stays part of the plan even once they can.
